A LOAN EXHIBITION
CHAGALL AND HIS CIRCLE
Archipenko, Berlewi, Chagall, Halicka, Kádár, Kisling, Mane-Katz, Mintchine, Orloff, Pascin, Rubin, Ryback, Soutine

6 June - 31 July 2005

Chagall and his Circle brings together a small select group of works primarily from private collections and museums abroad that have not been seen in London before. The exhibition is a forerunner to a substantial L'Ecole de Paris exhibition planned for 2007/2008.

These works take the audience from Russia through Eastern Europe to Paris where L'Ecole de Paris flourished and was a huge influence on the world's art movements and art collectors during the first half of the twentieth century.

Five works by Chagall, covering his long active life and diverse practice including two oils; 'Liberation' which is the smaller version of the seminal work in the Pompidou Centre and a unique still life, and a signed etching of his famous portrait of a Rabbi.

Ischer Ryback's oil 'Stilleben', from 1925, is an important example from this period between Russia and Berlin where he experimented with the use of montage and relief. This work represents attributes of power and wealth.

Chana Orloff's magnificent 'L'Accordeoniste, Per Krogh' from 1929, has not been exhibited before in the UK. It was last seen at the L'Ecole de Paris 1904 - 1929 exhibition at the Musee d'Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris 2000/2001. Chaim Soutine is represented by 'Deux Enfants' oil on canvas that is representational of Soutine's boldness of colour and composition.

This exhibition runs simultaneously with a selling exhibition of Chagall's two Bible series which is Ben Uri Enterprises Ltd.'s first commercial venture, in association with Goldmark Gallery, to raise funds for the museum.

The landscape painting featured above is also for sale. Moise Kisling (1891-1953), ‘Paysage de Gloucester’, oil on canvas. Please contact Frost and Reed for details.
