LONDON IS THE CENTRE OF THE WORLD
FOR JEWISH ARTISTS
On
Sunday 18th July over 300 people attended the opening
of the Ben Uri Gallery's latest exhibition "International
Jewish Artist of the Year Award: The Finalist's Show".
The 29 finalists, chosen from 800 submissions, include
entries from America, Europe and Israel; many of whom
made the journey to London specifically for this special
event. These
included Vitaly Komar, of the acclaimed Komar and Melamid,
Russian born New York artists who have two pieces in the
show "The Big Bang" and "Vanitas Still - Life", Lisa Gross
and Ruth Schreiber from Israel, Daniel Ben - Hur and Ronald
Golz from Germany, Christian Israel from Brussels, Yaki
Assayag from New York and many of the UK artists such
as Sarah Lightman, Julie Held, Hervé Constant, Anna Finchas,
Anneke Raber, Dalya Moss, Michal O'hana - Cole and Willow

The finalists were selected by judges led by Dr. Andrew Renton, Director of the Curatorial Programme at Goldsmiths College University of London and columnist for the Evening Standard newspaper; Dr. James Hyman, dealer and writer; artists Naomi Alexander, Carole Berman Sujo and David Breuer-Weil; curator Rachel Dickson, and the collector and patron of the arts Marion Naggar.
Rachel Dickson said "I am overwhelmed by the high standard of the pieces. The photographs supplied for judging did not do them justice. This show demonstrates the enormous wealth of talent amongst today's Jewish artists"
The finalist's exhibition will be shown at the Ben Uri Gallery in St. John's Wood until 22nd August; and the results will be announced at a gala celebration and awards ceremony at the Tram Studios in Camden Town on Sunday 12th September organised by the Ben Uri and the Friends of the Hebrew University.
Over 2,000 people attended the last awards ceremony and this year should be even busier. This year's winner will follow in the footsteps of their predecessor Nelly Agassi who has continued to develop her career internationally to considerable acclaim.
