Auktion 392: Reclaiming the Galerie Stern, Düsseldorf (2006)
Publisher: FOFA Gallery, Concordia University, 2006. Soft cover. This catalogue accompanied the exhibition “Auktion 392: Reclaiming the Galerie Stern, Düsseldorf”. Galerie Stern was owned by Jewish gallery owner Dr Max Stern and closed by the Nazis, who sold the works at a forced auction. The exhibition focuses on this injustice: issues of redress from the Nazi looting, forced sales and dispersal of people’s property. Assembled in the catalogue, there are 70 formerly missing pictures. These splendidly painted works show farmers and workers, beautiful landscapes, exotic native inhabitants of distant countries and religious scenes. The works were completed by artists like Andreas Achenbach, Carl Engel, Wilhelm Camphausen and Franz Xaver Winterhalter. Included are in-depth profiles on the artists and the accompanying artworks - skilfully written by arts history M.A. students of Concordia University in Canada.
